Admissions Information
General Information
The Department of Chemical Engineering has two application periods each year, one for entrance into the fall semester and the other for entrance into the spring semester. Please note, however, that available admissions spaces for the spring semester are much more limited than for the fall semester, as they are based solely upon faculty needs. Moreover, students seeking financial support are encouraged to apply directly to the Ph.D. program, as the department emphasizes the doctoral degree.
Applicants to either the M.S. (Master of Science) or Ph.D. programs are required to submit the following:
- Graduate College online admissions application
- Application fee -- $65/domestic degree application; $80/international degree application
- Three letters of recommendation from faculty or professionals who can comment on your research and scholarly capabilities
- GRE scores
- Official TOEFL scores (International Students only) – note that our department requires a minimum of 600 (PBT)/100 (IBT) for admissions consideration.
- Current Resume
- Statement of Purpose, describing your research interests and reasons for seeking a degree in our department
- Official transcripts from all prior institutions attended
In addition to the M.S./Ph.D. programs, the department offers an M.S.E. (Master of Science in Engineering) degree with a concentration in Semiconductor Processing and Manufacturing. Applicants to this program are required to submit all of the above requirements, with the exception of GRE scores.
Specific information concerning admissions procedures is outlined below. Note that all required admissions forms (i.e. Statement of Purpose form, Letter of Recommendation form, etc.) can be obtained through the online application. Admissions Procedures
Application to a degree program in the Department of Chemical Engineering requires the following procedures:
- Apply to the Graduate College through the online application:
https://sec.was.asu.edu/gcdegreeapp/Index.jsp
Please note that the Graduate College requires all applicants to submit official transcripts from prior institutions attended. All applicants are further required to pay either a $65 (domestic) or $80 (international) application fee. International students must additionally submit official TOEFL scores.
- The online application consists of two parts: a general information section and a degree section. Once you've completed the general information section, you will be prompted to select the degree program to which you'd like to apply. Please choose from one of the three degree codes:
a) for the M.S. in Chemical Engineering, please choose the following:
Chemical Engineering (MS) (ES610999)
b) for the M.S.E. in Chemical Engineering (SPM), please choose:
Chemical Engineering (MSE) (ES620999)
c) for the Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, please choose:
Chemical Engineering (PhD) (ES910999)
**Please see the individual degree outlines (under the link entitled “degree options”) for a review of program descriptions and requirements.
- Depending upon which degree program you choose, you will be asked to provide additional documentation (either uploaded directly online, or to be sent by mail to the Graduate College). Such documentation includes letters of recommendation, a current resume, statement of purpose, and official GRE scores.
- Applications will not be reviewed until all of the required documentation has been received by the Graduate College. Once an application is complete, it will be sent to our Graduate Admissions Committee for review. Please allow a minimum of 5-6 weeks for an evaluation of your application. Applicants will receive initial notification of admissions decisions via an email from the Graduate Coordinator. Official notification will come from the Graduate College. The Department does offer a limited number of teaching/research assistantships for incoming students. These are awarded on a highly competitive basis, and are usually reserved for those applicants with the most outstanding academic credentials. Moreover, these assistantships are generally awarded to students pursuing the Ph.D. degree.
Priority Application Deadlines: September 1 for the following spring semester; February 1 for the following fall semester. Submission of application materials by these deadlines will ensure priority consideration.
